STERLING – Two Rock Falls men were arrested Friday, one suspected of breaking into a gas station, and the other facing charges of obstruction of justice.

According to a news release from Sterling police:

Derrick M. Stone, 22, is suspected of breaking into the station at 2404 E. Lincolnway. He has not been charged in the break-in, but was arrested on warrants for possession of marijuana and failure to appear in court.

He was arrested about 1:10 p.m. in the 1500 block of Eighth Avenue, about 8 minutes after jumping out a window at Anthony M. Menchaca’s house in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue as police, acting on a tip that a burglar was inside, spoke with Menchaca.

Menchaca is charged with obstruction of justice. Police would not specify what it is he did to garner that charge.

Video surveillance showed a white man entering the gas station at 1:27 a.m., going to places where money was kept and taking an undisclosed amount of cash. Someone had broken a glass door to enter the station, the release said.

The investigation continues, and more charges are pending against Stone and Menchaca, who were taken to Whiteside County Jail, the release said.
