John H. Buyers

STERLING- John H. Buyers, 66, of Sterling, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Born July 6, 1946 in Sterling, he was a son of John Henry and Dorothy Johanna (Bruider) Buyers. He married Lisa Ridenhower on Aug. 7, 1976, in Sterling. He was an Army veteran with the 101st Airborne and served during the Vietnam War.

John was a correctional officer with the Illinois Department of Corrections until his retirement in 2002. He was an avid motorcyclist and a member of the Patriot Riders. He also enjoyed Corvette racing and tinkering with his tractor, and taught Bujin Kempo Karate. John was a member of the Rock Falls American Legion Post 902, the Rock Falls VFW and was an Honor Flight supporter.

Surviving are his wife Lisa, of Sterling; a daughter, Stephanie (Ernesto) Cruz of Glen Burnie, Md; two sons, Doug Buyers and Chris (Cassandra) Buyers of Sterling; a brother, Karl Buyers of Tampico; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dalmus Meeks officiating. 

Burial with full military honors will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park.

A memorial has been established to the Wounded Warrior Project Honor Guard.
