Oregon Rotary awards scholarships

OREGON – The Oregon Rotary Club Foundation Inc. has announced the four Oregon area students who have been selected as 2013 Oregon Rotary Club Foundation Scholars. Two of these outstanding students also have been named as Andrew and Helen Cirksena Scholars.

Allison Kereven and Jessica Griffin were designated as the annual Oregon Rotary Club Foundation’s Andrew and Helen Cirksena Scholars and, as such, will each receive $1,500. Kereven graduated in 2008 from Oregon High School and is a senior at Northern Illinois University. She is working toward her goal to teach physical education. Griffin graduated in 2003 from OHS. She is working toward her master’s degree in science at DePaul University. Both women participate in various extracurricular activities and community events while achieving academic success.

Jessica Dieken and Libby Stephens each received a $1,000 scholarship and were designated as Oregon Rotary Foundation Scholars. Dieken is a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University. She is a math education major and would like to work with junior high students upon graduation. Stephens is sophomore at Elmhurst College. She is studying both business and Spanish.

Oregon Rotary Club’s scholarship program has been helping college students for 29 years. The program began in 1984, with one $500 scholarship being awarded. As of this year, 103 scholarships amounting to $96,550 have been awarded. Each year, the Oregon Rotary Club Foundation Board selects recipients whom the board feels meets the ideals of Rotary International.
