Support the Zoning Board’s decision

Published: Friday, May 17, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

The Lee County Board members have a task that should be simple.

The County Board chairman, with the board’s approval, appointed the current Zoning Board of Appeals. Its task was to hear the testimony and review the evidence and then make a recommendation to the County Board. They spent the time and effort to do that, and the recommendation by a majority vote was to deny this specific project’s special use permit.

The Lee County Comprehensive Plan states that each wind project proposal should be evaluated on a site-specific, case-by-case basis.

Supporting the Zoning Board means you agree that wind energy is not appropriate for this area of Lee County because of agricultural difficulties, natural resources, wildlife areas, and environmental corridors. It does not mean you are against wind energy in Lee County.

As one Lee County Board member said in a March 28, 2012, Sauk Valley Media article, “I believe windmills should go where people want them.”

A petition by landowners and residents in the project area proves that the majority of the people do not want them.

Bravo to the Zoning Board for recognizing those problems, supporting the people, and recommending by majority vote to deny the Green River Wind Farm petition.

Please encourage the Lee County Board to support the Zoning Board’s decision.
