Stop awarding kids for perfect attendance

Published: Monday, May 20, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Your article on May 13 [“Sterling High to end class rankings”] met with my hearty approval.

Another issue that has plagued me for many years is “perfect attendance.” No award should be given for being healthy enough to attend school. No parents should have the right to send their children to school sick, just for them to have that perfect attendance.

Some children have poor immune systems, such as my daughter, which leaves them unable to fight germs, etc. They get sick by the day.

I let the school administration know about her needing IV’s at home. They did not pass this information to the classroom teachers, so in turn, they viewed her as a habitual absentee.

These two items that are mentioned in this letter are both discrimination. Sorry to say, both have been taught for many years in the schools.

Hats off to Sterling for seeing that whether students are at the top of the heap or the bottom, they are still worthy.
