Baseball: Dixon's Thomas headed to Indy

John Thomas is going to be running with the Greyhounds this fall.

The Dixon High School senior recently committed to play baseball at the University of Indianapolis, a Division-II school with an enrollment of 5,345 students. The Greyhounds are members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Thomas visited the Indy campus in mid-April, and worked out with the baseball team. There is a local connection to the school, as one of the assistant coaches is Al Ready, a former coach at Sauk Valley Community College. Gary Vaught is the head coach.

“Their athletic facilities are second to none,” Thomas said, “and I really liked the coach, the school – everything. The campus, it’s really compact, so it’s easy to get to classes. It’s not too big, a really safe campus, clean – it’s just a really nice environment for me.”

The Greyhounds finished the 2013 season 27-20 and did not qualify for the postseason, but are annually one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They wound up 19-17 in league play.

“They’re a very competitive program,” Thomas said. “They’ve had a lot of NCAA Tournament appearances, and that’s what I’m looking forward to. I’d like to see a championship in my time there.”

Thomas is batting .343 this season, with 14 runs batted in, three triples and two doubles. On the mound, he is 2-7 with a 7.39 earned run average in 36 innings.
