Rod leads Raiders in regional opener

AFC hangs on

Fourth-seeded AFC built a 4-0 lead then held on to beat fifth-seeded Paw Paw 4-3 in a Class 1A AFC Regional first-round matchup Monday at Ashton.

AFC (8-10), which advances to a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Amboy on Wednesday, got a strong pitching performance from Paul Rod (3-1). Rod piled up 13 strikeouts, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs in a complete game.

Bret Gittleson and Tyler Shugars had RBI doubles for the Raiders, who also had RBI singles from Rod and Andrew LeFevre.

Paw Paw rallied for three runs in the seventh before leaving the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at first.

Class 2A Morrison Regional

Riverdale 9, West Carroll 8: The Thunder had a chance to extend their season but were unable to hang on in Port Byron.

The Thunder held leads of 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh inning; 7-5 entering the bottom of the eighth; and 8-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to seal the deal.

Josh Sullivan and Tyler Westerman each drove in two runs for West Carroll, while Aaron Ritenour and Tom Watson each rapped out three hits. Marshall Benters was the losing pitcher.

Regular season

Rock Falls 7, Genoa-Kingston 1: Jace Anderson improved to 7-0 as the Rockets won a nonconference game at Genoa.

Anderson struck out eight and allowed one run on nine hits and a walk in a complete game. He also had two hits and an RBI.

Teammate Jacob Mammosser also had two hits and an RBI, and Trace Hippen drove in two for Rock Falls (18-7).

Amboy 20, Hinckley-Big Rock 6, 5 inn.: Reece Howell had five RBIs and Taylor Ikens had three hits as the Clippers rolled to a nonconference road victory over the Royals.

Amboy (13-16) had six-run innings in the first and third, and four-run frames in the second and fourth in the rout. Chuck Deininger (3-2) worked 3 1/3 innings in relief for the win.

Lena-Winslow 4, Forreston-Polo 3: The Cardinals fell just short in a nonconference clash at Lena.

Nathan Schneiderman homered and Jonah Drake drove in two runs for Forreston-Polo (12-10).
