BYRON – A 63-year-old Byron man died early Monday in a single-vehicle crash on state Route 2, about 2 miles north of town, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Tuesday.

A 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Joseph Codd was southbound about 12:50 a.m. when it went off the right side of the road and hit several trees, one head-on, before coming to rest 25 feet off the road, Sheriff Michael Harn reported.

A Lifeline helicopter arrived, but after being removed from the SUV, Codd, who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was planned, the release said.

The accident is under investigation.
