Crews working 12-hour shifts to clean up damage

STERLING – You can now run and play basketball at Westwood Sports Center, which was damaged in a fire last week. But you’ll have to hold off on weight-lifting and tennis.

On Monday, Westwood, 1900 Westwood Drive, opened its main lobby, lobby restrooms, basketball courts and track. They are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. All aerobics classes are expected to resume next Monday.

But the fitness center and tennis courts will remain closed. Some of the center’s patrons have been going to Duis Recreation Center.

Westwood’s cardio room and lower section of the fitness center tentatively are scheduled to reopen May 28. Once the fitness center reopens, Westwood’s summer hours will go into effect – 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Last Monday, a fire started in Westwood’s maintenance room and caused smoke damage to the fitness center and tennis courts. No one was hurt.

Now, cleaning crews of about 30 people are working 12-hour shifts, 6 days a week. Their immediate tasks are structural cleaning, demolition, and odor removal in the fitness center, aerobics room, west locker rooms, and tennis courts.

After that, they will move to the racquetball courts, batting cages, staff offices, and storage areas. Cleaning is expected to last until June 3. Reconstruction will start after the cleaning is completed.

The Duis alternative

Until repairs are complete, Westwood Sports Center's Total Fitness pass holders may use the fitness center at Duis Recreation Center, 211 E. 23rd St.

To accommodate the additional patrons, Duis' operating hours have been expanded to 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. These hours will be in effect until the Westwood fitness center reopens, which is tentatively set for May 28.
