Area ‘Mathletes’ shine during state competition against other scholars

STERLING – Thirty Newman Central Catholic High School math club members competed May 4 in the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics contest at the University of Illinois.

The school placed eighth in the 1A division in Urbana-Champaign

Awards were given for several team events:

Fifth place, Algebra II: Jacob Ardis, Nate Edison, Allison Furr, Shilong Jin, Jonathan Neisewander, and Todd Nelson. 

Sixth place, junior-senior-8: Edison, Furr, Alex Li, Neisewander, Nelson, Mac Olson, Ryan Schaab, and Lucas Terveer.

Sixth place, freshman-sophomore-2: Jakob Frank and Elliott Frankfother.

Seventh place, geometry: Kenneth Ellorando, Frank, Frankfother, Connor Knack, Linnea Larson, and Amy Ryan.

Ninth place, junior-senior relay: Andrew Burke, Allie Harkness, Baleigh Osborne, and Mariah Staebell.

Other team members whose scores contributed to the team’s eighth-place finish were Morgan Ely, Victor Francque, Clay Jungerman, Max Oswalt, Brady Rude, Paige Ruthart, Aubree Schmitt, Allison Shipman, Kyle Moore, and Yu Fu. 

Diana Wade is the club adviser.
