DIXON – Henry L. “Hank” Cordell Jr., 87, of Dixon, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center. 

He was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Watertown, S.D., the son of Henry and Mary (Schmitt) Cordell. He had worked for Nicor for 33 years before retiring. Henry was an avid fisherman, and loved to travel.

He was a veteran of the Army. Henry was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, where he had been an usher for many years. He volunteered for the Dixon Food Pantry, PADS Shelter, Meals on Wheels, Loaves and Fishes, St. Mary School bingo, and Lee County Honor Flight. Henry also had volunteered during the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. He married Geraldine E. Antanitis on Aug. 6, 1949, in Sterling.

He is survived by his wife; children, Mary Kay (Dwight) Burgess of Harmon, Charles (Anne) Cordell, Diane (Louis) Wolfe, and Judy (Greg) Grubb, all of Dixon, Barbara (Dennis) Willems of Colombia, Mo., Paul (Janice) Cordell of The Colony, Texas, and Ann (George) Yundt of Andover, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Miller of Sterling.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Cordell; and four sisters, Dorothy Sumner, Mary Margaret Halbmeir, Lois Hohlen, and Bernice Cordell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. A prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Christian Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Bernard Sehr officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.  

A memorial has been established.
