Ernestine Barron

STERLING – Ernestine Barron, 90, of Sterling, died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Ernestine was born on March 22, 1923, in Deming, N.M., to Felipe and Angela (Chavez) Penaflor. She married John Barron in 1948. He passed away in 1975. She then shared many years with her longtime companion, Santos Lopez. Ernestine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and enjoyed playing bingo and reading. 

Survivors include three daughters, Vickie Rios of Rock Falls, Cynthia “Tita” Montanez of Sterling, and Rosary “Bobbie” (Nick) Rodriguez of Sterling; two sons, John (Linda) Barron of Rock Falls and Santos “Rene” Rodriguez of Sterling; two brothers, Rocky (Mary Lou) Penaflor of Galt and Manuel (Eliza) Penaflor of Sterling; one sister, Alice Estrada of Sterling; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, John Barron and Santos Lopez; one daughter, Linda Cardenas; one son-in-law, Alfredo Rios; one grandchild, Jaime Gorena; two brothers, Dave Penaflor and Raul Penaflor in infancy; and two sisters, Dominga Manzano and Lydia Trujillo.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, with the rosary recited at 9 a.m., at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Juan Ayala officiating. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
