ROCK FALLS – Piedad R. “Pia” Saldivar, 95, of Rock Falls, died Friday, May 10, 2013, peacefully at her home.

Pia was born Sept. 13, 1917, in San Benito, Texas, the daughter of Manuel and Guadalupe Rodriguez. She married Rudolfo “Rudy” Saldivar on Dec. 12, 1933, in San Benito, Texas. They had just celebrated 76 years of marriage prior to his death on May 5, 2011. 

Pia and her husband, Rudy, owned and operated El Porvenir Spanish Bakery in Sterling for 15 years. She was employed at Borg Warner for many years prior to her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary at the Latin American Social Club in Sterling and St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, where she also served on the Altar Rosary Society. Pia was a wonderful cook and seamstress; she loved to dance, travel and feed the birds; was a prayer warrior; loved all her children; and was a grandma to all.

Survivors include three daughters, Ofelia “Mickie” Coffman-Shoffner of Saugatuck, Mich., Ernestina “Tina” Cantu of Sterling, and San Juanita “Jane” Saldivar of Rock Falls; four sons, Rudolfo “Rudy” (Joy) Saldivar, Jr. and Ernesto “Ernest” Saldivar, both of Warsaw, Ind., Arturo “Art” (Diane) Saldivar of Pierceton, Ind., and Ronald Rodriguez of Sterling; five sisters, Virginia (Joe) Donna, Juanita Craig and Josie (Kim) Wright, all of Sterling, and Estella (Nick) Cruz and Emelinda Howard, both of Rock Falls; three brothers, Raul (Nicole) Rodriguez and Israel (Dolly) Rodriguez, both of Sterling, and Paul (Pam) Rodriguez of Rockford; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Alice Saldivar, and one daughter and two sons in infancy; two sisters, Nieves and Guadalupe Cantu; and two brothers, Ignacio and Manuel Rodriguez.    

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., at Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling. Mass of Christian burial is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Juan Ayala, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

A memorial has been established.
