Oregon center fielder Ian Holley loves running down fly balls. But not as much as he loves the beautiful game of soccer.

How did you get into soccer?

My dad [Jay] and John McCormick started me young on a youth team. There were a whole bunch of us playing both indoor and outdoor soccer, and I just fell in love with it.

Which do you like better, indoor or outdoor?

Indoor, definitely. It’s a very quick game, all about speed. You play 7-on-7 instead of 11-on-11, and it’s a smaller field. It’s just a lot of fun.

So I take it soccer’s your favorite sport?

By far. It’s a lot slower than basketball or baseball, but there’s definitely something deeper to it. That’s why they call it the ‘beautiful game.’

What’s your favorite thing about basketball?

Shooting, definitely … and that’s about it. I love to shoot and pass and run an offense. Plus, it’s easy to get the ball to guys like Caleb Mowry.

So you’re a ‘team sports’ kind of guy?

I think it’s a lot more fun that way. You don’t have to just depend on yourself or be out there alone. Depending on other people makes it a lot more fun, and it’s a big stress reliever.

What do you like most about baseball?

Playing defense, by far. I love chasing down a fly ball in the outfield; I’m definitely a defensive-minded person. Ever since I was little, my dad has stressed defense and said the hitting will come. I hope it starts coming around soon.

Are things more urgent now that you’re a senior?

Definitely. The little things during games and practices seem more important to remember. It just shows how fast it goes. I’d give advice to the younger guys to enjoy it as much as you can, because it will be over before you know it.

What do you do in your rare free time?

Actually, I don’t even know how to answer that; free time isn’t something I have a lot of. I actually play sports, like driveway basketball or just throwing the ball around in the park.

Who would you love to eat a meal with?

First, I’d say Dustin Pedroia, because he’s a small guy who plays hard, and I try to do the same. Next, Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid; he’s just an amazing athlete. Then, I’d have to say my friends, just because we have a great time hanging out and doing stuff together … and eating is definitely one of the things we do the most.

Would a reality TV show about your life be popular?

Probably not, honestly. It would just be the same thing day in and day out, nothing too strange or surprising. I try to live a drama-free life.
