Mary A. Nelson

STERLING – Mary Alice Nelson, 78, of Sterling, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Coventry Living Center in Sterling.

Mary was born March 17, 1935, in Macon, Miss., to Charles and Sarah (Lucas) Neal. She married Robert Nelson Jr. in Sterling. Mary worked for many years at General Electric Co. in Morrison. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Sterling. She loved to bowl, and was the pitcher for the local 3A fast-pitch softball team. Among Mary’s hobbies, her favorite was being a grandmother.

Survivors include two sons, Butch (Kim) Neal and Darris Rowland, both of Rock Falls; three grandchildren, Chris, Jacob, and Shawon Neal; two great-grandchildren, Orion and Mila Neal; one sister, Verna Jennings of Rockford; one brother, Willie Neal of Carbondale; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Esther Long and Lorene Winfield; as well as a host of many other friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and four brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Harts officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. A repast will be held after the burial at Macedonia Baptist Church in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
