Softball roundup: Streator softball slips past Dixon late

With three runs in the sixth, Streator rallied past Dixon for a 5-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 West win Thursday at Reynolds Field.

The Duchesses scored a run in the third and fourth and responded with one in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting.

Erin Smith took the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – on eight hits while striking out four. She had two hits, and Rachel Musser, Brooke Bailey and Haley Fitzsimmons each had an RBI for Dixon.

Mollie Benner posted a complete game and two hits for Streator.

Sterling 4, Geneseo 1: The Golden Warriors won a NIB-12 West road game, despite being outhit 10-9.

Karlie Mellott’s inside-the-park home run, part of a three-hit game, highlighted a three-run bottom of the third for Sterling (18-1, 8-1).

Stephanie Kester allowed seven hits in four innings and got the win. Priscilla Aponte worked three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four and walking one.

Steamers, Panthers split in
Fulton: The Panthers avoided a sweep by rallying in Game 2 of a Three Rivers doubleheader.

Behind Olivia Edfors’ two RBIs, Fulton took Game 1 7-4. Katherine Wayne struck out 12 and limited the Panthers (5-11, 2-11) to four runs on 12 hits to get the win.

Emily Cox had three RBIs on two hits in Game 2, a 6-5 Panthers victory. Addie Glassburn got the win.

The Steamers took a 5-3 lead with five runs in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers responded with three in the bottom half and held on.

Lena-Winslow 6, West Carroll 2: Allison Thulen struck out nine, but the Thunder lost an NUIC West game in Thomson.

Thulen (8-7) allowed 10 hits, and five of the Lena-Winslow (11-7, 9-4) runs were earned. Thulen had an RBI for West Carroll (9-15, 9-5).

AFC swept by Orangeville at home: The Broncos scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to finish off a 15-4, five-inning victory in Game 1 of an NUIC East doubleheader in Ashton, then edged the Raiders 7-4 in the nightcap.

Cassidy Koning worked five innings for AFC (2-14) in Game 2, allowing three earned runs. Lauren Meurer had two hits and an RBI.

Girls soccer

Geneseo 8, Sterling 0: After two games against the NIB-12 West’s premier team this week, the
Warriors face Dixon tonight in a Class 2A United Township Regional opener in Sterling.

The Warriors (7-11-2, 3-4-1) wrap up the regular season with a program record for wins.
