Summer lunch program starts May 28 in Whiteside County
United Way seeks donations for lunches
STERLING – The Let’s Feed Our Children summer lunch program kicks off the day after Memorial Day, but the United Way of Whiteside County is seeking donations now.
The program is designed to supplement meals for children who get free or reduced-price lunches during the school year, but it’s available to anyone who needs a lunch; no one is turned away, and no questions are asked.
The program served just fewer than 30,000 lunches last year, mostly to children.
Bag lunches are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at sites in Sterling, Rock Falls, Morrison and Tampico from May 28 to Aug. 16.
Lunches typically include a peanut butter and jelly or bologna sandwich, fruit, snacks or treats and 100 percent juice.
They are served:
In Sterling: At First United Methodist Church, 501 Broadway Ave.; Macedonia Baptist Church, 1313 Woodburn Ave.; St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 703 Third Ave.; and Wallace Education Center, 506 W. Fourth St..
Mobile deliveries are made to Ster-Lynn Estates, 215 25th St., Douglas Park and the Steelton area.
In Rock Falls: At Coloma Homes, 401 W. 18th St.; and Rock Falls United Methodist Church, 210 Fourth Ave.
Mobile deliveries are made to Country Acres Mobile Home Park, 1600 Riverdale Road; East Z Living Mobile Home Park, 1507 W. Route 30; and the Yeowardsville area.
In Morrison: At the Crave Building, 201 W. Market St.
In Tampico: At the Community Building, 106 W. Market St.
Donations help fill those brown bags.
Local churches are holding drives to collect basic supplies. People are encouraged to bring jars of creamy peanut butter or grape jelly to church this weekend, then to bring foldover-top, plastic sandwich bags and zipper-top, plastic snack bags to church on Father’s Day weekend, June 15-16.
They also may bring those items to the United Way, 502 First Ave. in Sterling, or to the Sauk Valley Food Bank, 1801 Plant Drive in Sterling.
People may send checks, payable to Let’s Feed Our Children, to P.O. Box 806, Sterling, IL 61081.
Volunteers also are needed to help fill the brown bags and then deliver them to meal sites. Anyone interested should call the United Way at 815-625-7973.
