Road to stay closed for several more hours in Rock Falls

ROCK FALLS – The north side of the 1000 block of Dixon Avenue was evacuated after a water department crew ruptured a gas main around 8 a.m.

No one was hurt, but a large amount of natural gas was released, and residents were advised to keep their windows closed, Rock Falls Police said in a news release.

The 1000 and 1100 blocks of Dixon were closed to traffic while repairs were made.

Late in the afternoon, Rock Falls City Administrator Robbin Blackert said crews had plugged the leak, but the street would remain closed for several more hours.

"They were digging to expose the line. They didn't realize the line was on an incline. It was one of those freak things," Blackert said.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
