SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Authorities have charged an Illinois prison guard with delivering a cellphone to an inmate at the maximum-security Menard Correctional Center.
Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker says Charles McClard faces a charge of bringing contraband into a penal institution. Walker says it's a felony that could bring a penalty ranging from probation to seven years in prison.
Walker said Tuesday that the incident occurred in February and McClard "was receiving remuneration for the cellphone." He would not comment further but said the inmate allegedly involved has not been charged.
Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer says "multiple electronic devices" were involved. He says McClard has been suspended without pay while an investigation is underway.
McClard does not have a listed number and could not be contacted.
