Forum group to learn more about fracking

Published: Tuesday, May 7, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

The Rock River Open Forum will be showing the DVD “Gasland” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Rock Falls Public Library. The 2010 documentary was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2011.

The film focuses on the use of fracking, a method of horizontal drilling into shale formations. The director, Josh Fox, sets out to see how fracking has affected citizens in their homes and on their land in Colorado, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Utah and Texas. Presently, Illinois is seriously considering allowing fracking in our state.

Many of our citizenry would like to see a 3-year moratorium on fracking; during this period of time, the following concerns can be scientifically analyzed:

n Contamination of drinking water and groundwater;

n Gas seepage into homes;

n Release of methane gas into the air that would contribute to global warming;

n Earthquakes, especially along known fault lines near nuclear plants;

n Large quantities of waste water that contain numerous toxic chemicals, including heavy metals, radioactive particles, salts, and hydrocarbons like benzene, formaldehyde and toluene;

n Huge pipelines, compressor stations, and heavy semi-trailer traffic; and

n Detrimental influences on agriculture, infrastructure, living conditions, emergency systems, employment, tourism and the earth itself.

Time should allow for a discussion of the subject.
