Thank those who selected public service

Published: Saturday, May 4, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

Across the country and in every community, government employees work hard to protect and serve our nation and deliver essential services. To honor these workers and their service, May 5-11 has been designated as Public Service Recognition Week.

Despite tight budgets and reduced staffing, public servants are working even harder to deliver essential services such as storm weather warnings, food inspections, airport security, snow removal, fire and police protection, mail delivery, processing of Social Security checks, and so many other services often taken for granted.

Of course, when military action is warranted or an emergency or disaster response is needed, the training and courage of our federal, state and local responders makes everyone proud and appreciative.

During the week and throughout the year, thank those who have chosen public service.
