Historical Society to meet in Sterling

STERLING – Retired Fulton High School teacher Ron Koehn will speak May 19 about President Abraham Lincoln’s river connections before elected president.

The Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society’s May meeting will start at 2 p.m. in the Ryberg Auditorium at CGH Medical Center, 100 E. LeFevre Road.

Koehn’s program will be about Lincoln’s work in litigation involving railroads and riverboats. He will include information about Lincoln’s life as an assistant steamboat pilot and jobs on flatboats on the Mississippi and Sangamon rivers.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Men to serve women dinner

STERLING – Trinity United Methodist Church women will have a “Hats Off to the Women” evening Monday at the church, 205 E. 10th St.

Dinner will be served by the church’s men at 6 p.m.

Marge Kontos will tell the tale of Helen Steiner Rice, and music will be provided by Annette Hicks.

Participants are welcome to wear a decorated hat. They will be entered into a prize drawing. There also will be door prizes.

Women of all ages are welcome.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Trinity UMC or by calling 815-441-1988 or 815-625-7910.
