Newman 5K set
for May 18

The Newman High School Friends & Family 5K will take place at 9 a.m. May 18. Registration can be mailed to Jodi Sunday, 1101 W. 23rd St., Sterling. Cost is $22.

7:30 a.m.

IHSA bass fishing finals postponed 

The IHSA bass fishing state finals scheduled for this weekend have been postponed because of potentially dangerous water levels at Carlyle Lake in Carlyle.

The makeup date has not been determined.


Assembly Hall
gets new name

The only Assembly Hall in the Big Ten is now in Bloomington, Ind.

Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas announced Monday that the dome in Champaign immediately will be called State Farm Center. The insurance company struck a $60
million, 30-year deal for the naming rights.

The 50-year-old arena
is tabbed to undergo a
$160 million renovation project beginning next spring.


League wants
Kings to stay put

A committee of NBA owners recommended Monday that the league reject a proposal to move the Sacramento Kings to Seattle.

A final decision on the Kings’ fate will be made by owners of all of the teams in a vote expected by May 13. Monday’s recommendation is expected to carry considerable weight with them.


Cubs prospect Soler benched by manager

Dave Keller is about as old school as they come, and the former Cubs coach and current manager of the team’s Class A Daytona affiliate didn’t like what he saw from top prospect Jorge Soler.

So Soler became one of the first prominent examples of the Cubs Way, finding himself on  the bench Sunday for failing to run hard.
