Benefit planned for man with ALS

DIXON – A benefit is being planned for a Dixon man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Scott Setchell, 49, was diagnosed in December with the ailment.

Setchell’s sister, Jacqueline Sondgeroth, is helping to organize the benefit, to be held May 19 at Corner Spot Sports Bar. She is seeking donations, which can be made at the benefit or online at She is also seeking items for a live auction.

Items already donated include four White Sox tickets with a parking permit and a picture of the Baltimore Ravens 2013 Super Bowl team signed by Sean Considine.

Setchell needs adjustments to his home to help him get around, and he needs a new wheelchair better suited to someone with ALS. The wheelchair he uses is designed for an elderly person and does not have a molded seat that can hold upright someone with his disease. He also needs to replace three thresholds in his house that are too high for a wheelchair and needs a ramp to go into his backyard.

Setchell is married to Candi Setchell. Their children are Kevin Setchell, 23, and Jonathan Setchell, 26, both of Dixon.

“I’m glad that so many people are interested in helping me,” he said.
