Amboy senior pitcher Lauren Akre throws to first to retire her counterpart, Newman ace Laura Turnroth, during the Clippers' 6-2 Three Rivers victory Thursday in Sterling. Akre improved to 5-4 on the season and is enjoying her time in the spotlight following the graduation of Kiara Kaleel.

Even during the nasty weather that has made for a choppy spring sports season, take comfort in knowing Amboy pitcher Lauren Akre is smiling.

How long have you been pitching?

Eight years. I started with Dixon Ponytail Fastpitch.

What made you want to be a pitcher?

My dad just kind of threw me in there, because we didn’t have anybody else. He figured, we need a pitcher. Who better than my daughter?

You were stuck behind Kiara Kaleel last year. How nice is it to be the ace now?

I love it. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to pitch for Amboy, and I’m finally doing it. It was a great to watch Kiara pitch, but now it feels really good to be the one in control, who my teammates look to.

What’s your favorite thing about this Amboy team?

We really have grown up together. We know how to build each other up and how to get out of slumps.

What are your plans after high school?

I’m going to go to Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, and play softball. I decided this winter. I went for a visit, met the coach, they said they wanted me to play, and we pretty much went from there.

You know, Jordan Ernst was the guy who put you up to this.

I saw that. I need to thank him. I’ll tweet him after.

Why do you think he suggested you?

I’m just able to keep a calm head through anything. I never get too down about anything.

Where do you get that from?

I think a lot of it I get from my dad, who always tells me, “It’s already happened. Now just leave it behind.” My mom, too. She’s pretty easy-going.

What would your teammates say is the most unique thing about you?

I laugh at pretty much everything, and I’m smiling all the time.

What school subject puts a smile on your face?

Math. That’s definitely my favorite subject. Although I’m not taking a math class right now.

But you’re still smiling?

Yeah. Always.
