MLB: Sox scout says Bears draft pick was 'man amongst boys'

Former Oregon guard and Bears draft pick Kyle Long, shown being introduced Friday at Halas Hall, was a draft pick of the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox haven’t been afraid to sign football players, and scouting director Doug Laumann recalls impressive memories of pitcher-turned offensive lineman Kyle Long.

“I really got to see him perform well in a Perfect Game showcase in Cincinnati,” Laumann said of Long, who was selected by the Sox in the 23rd round of the 2008 draft. On Thursday night, the Chicago Bears made Long their 20th overall pick.

“He was physically a man amongst boys that summer before his senior year. He threw 95-96 from the left side and showed as much raw power as I’d ever seen.”

Long, however, signed a letter of intent to Florida State and honored his commitment, despite a subpar senior year in high school and the Sox’s continued interest.

“He did not come close to repeating those tools his senior year,” Laumann said.  “There was a lot of bad weather, and he never really got it together.  As it became later in the draft, we felt we should go off of what we saw the previous summer, and hope it would return.”
