Frederick R. Berg

FULTON – Frederick R. Berg, 83, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at his home in Fulton.

Fred was born June 1, 1929, in Bloomer, Wis., to George and Elizabeth (Dietsche) Berg. He attended St. Paul Catholic School in Bloomer and Bloomer High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin College of Pharmacy. After graduation, he served with distinction in the Korean War as a first lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps of the Army. He was assigned to the KMAG (Korean Military Advisory Group). He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Fred married Jane Fitzpatrick on July 9, 1955, at St. Patrick Church in Delmar, Iowa. He was the clinic pharmacist at the Sterling-Rock Falls Clinic from 1961 to 1970. In 1970, he moved to Fulton, where he owned and operated Berg Pharmacy until 1986. He also worked as the hospital pharmacist at Morrison Community Hospital and owned Fitzgerald Pharmacy for 5 years in Morrison. He was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Fulton Country Club, and served on the board when the club was first organized. He enjoyed golfing, photography, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Fred is survived by his wife, Jane Berg of Fulton; three children, Thomas (Mary Therese) of Green Bay, Wis., William (Elizabeth) of Indianapolis, and Daniel (Mary Anne) of Iowa City, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Tom, Katie, and Nick Berg of Indianapolis, and Stephen and Michael Berg of Iowa City. Also surviving are a brother, Roger Berg of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and a sister, Beverly Boetcher of Bloomer, Wis.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings, brothers, Robert, Leonard, and Donald, and sisters, Jeanette, Alice, Florence, and Esther.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with the rosary recited at 7 p.m., Monday at McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton, with the Rev. David Austin officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Hill Catholic Cemetery in Fulton. Pallbearers will be Tony Kuebel, Greg Donoho, Ray Zimmerman, Luke Vander Bleek, Terry Tufty, and Jim Fitzpatrick. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Field, Richard Feldpausch, and Bill Mungen. After the graveside service, a luncheon will be served at Immaculate Conception Parish Hall.

Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Church or Mercy Hospice.
