Turnroth twirls three-hitter for Comets

Laura Turnroth tossed a three-hitter to lead the Newman softball team to a 4-0 win over Bureau Valley on Wednesday in Manlius.

Turnroth (5-2) struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Jenna Stevens had a pair of RBIs for the Comets (5-2, 5-2 Three Rivers).

Dana Kepner took the loss for BV, allowing two earned runs, two hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Rock Falls 11, Winnebago 2: Jordan Giddings allowed just one earned run and three hits while striking out 10 as the Rockets rolled over the visiting Indians.

Giddings also doubled and drove in a run for Rock Falls (12-2, 3-1 Big Northern West). Linsey Brown had two RBIs, while Julie Dodd and Morgan Mammosser each had two hits.

DeKalb 10, Dixon 0, 5 inn.: Morgan Newport threw a two-hitter and drove in four runs in a nonconference game in DeKalb.

Erin Smith went the distance for Dixon, and four of the runs were unearned. Rachel Musser had both of the Duchesses' hits.

Durand 10, AFC 0, 6 inn.: Ella McCorkle drove in three runs, and the Bulldogs pulled away late in the NUIC East matchup in Durand.

Cassidy Koning (2-3) had two hits and took the complete-game loss and was victimized by six unearned runs. She struck out three and walked two, and Sarah Matson doubled for AFC (2-4, 1-3).

Haley Smith got the win for Durand, striking out six, walking five and scattering four hits.

Fillies take two: Morrison stayed undefeated in Three Rivers play with a pair of 5-inning wins in Kewanee, 24-8 in the opener and 13-1 in the nightcap.

Chelsea Eads knocked in seven runs between the two games, while Allie Renkes added four for the Fillies (11-2, 7-0). Allie Wiersema and Lauren Pannier got the wins in the circle.

Thunder, Panthers split two: Allison Thulen allowed three earned runs in nine innings as West Carroll gained a 6-5 win at Lena-Winslow in the first game of a doubleheader.

Thulen also collected three hits and two RBIs to pace an 11-hit attack. Ieshia Larson drove in two runs for the Thunder (6-10, 6-0 NUIC West).

The second game was nonconference and won by Lena-Winslow, 3-1 in five innings.

Girls soccer

Sterling 3, Streator 1: Freshman Rosa Sanchez's second hat trick of the season spearheaded the Golden Warriors' comeback Northern Illinois Big 12 West victory at Roscoe Eades.

Sanchez scored on a header off a Kayleen Terrock throw-in, as well as on a penalty kick and a free kick. The Golden Warriors battled back from a 1-0 deficit to improve to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the West.

College softball

Skyhawks sweep Kish: Cali Bartholomew had a hand in Sauk Valley's taking a doubleheader from visiting Kishwaukee, 7-5 in the opener and 7-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Bartholomew had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run to pace a 14-hit attack. Therese Jender added two RBIs. Kiara Kaleel was the winning pitcher.

In the second game, Bartholomew tossed 3 2/3 innings of 1-hit relief for the Skyhawks (26-10-1, 12-6 Arrowhead). Kelsey Hagen and Beth Fuller each had two RBIs.
