Sterling’s Reynolds receives CCIW honor

Bari Reynolds, a 2010 Sterling High School graduate and Augustana College junior, was named one of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women’s tennis co-players of the week.

Reynolds won both of her matches against Carroll on April 21.


Twin City League to begin May 7

The Twin Cities Handicap Horseshoe League will begin play for the 2013 season on Tuesday, May 7 at Lawrence Park in Sterling. Play starts at 6:30 p.m. and cost is $2 per week.

Verlander leaves early against Royals

Justin Verlander left Detroit’s game against Kansas City on Thursday with what the team described as cracked skin on his right thumb.

Verlander allowed one earned run in seven innings before departing. The right-hander is day-to-day. The 30-year-old has made at least 30 starts every season since 2006.


McDermott returing to Creighton

Doug McDermott has elected to stay at Creighton for his senior year and forego the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-8, 225-pound two-time first-team All-American led all Division-I players with 23.2 points per game as a junior.


Dictators might have fixed World Cup

The 1978 and 1934 World Cup events might have been fixed by dictators fixing matches for the Argentinian team.

Delegates were told at Thursday’s symposium in Zurich titled “The Relevance and Impact of FIFA World Cups” that military leaders seeking propaganda coups influenced athletes. 


Metal detectors to be used in Moscow

Metal detectors for spectators will be installed along the entire marathon course at the world athletics championships in August, part of increased security following last week’s Boston bombings, Russian organizers said.
