Caterpillar to reopen E. Peoria site after floods

EAST PEORIA (AP) — Caterpillar will reopen its East Peoria campus Sunday after a weeklong closure meant to protect workers and equipment from flooding along the rain-swollen Illinois River.

As record floodwaters recede on the river and other Midwestern waterways, Caterpillar says it will reopen in time for Sunday's third shift.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/ZKPTQa ) that the precautionary closure began this past Sunday and affected about 6,800 employees of the heavy equipment maker.

The Illinois River has crested in many communities in Illinois and begun a slow retreat in inundated Peoria.

Tuesday's crest of more than 29 feet eclipsed a 70-year record.
