Sterling’s Vandersee gets leadership award

Augustana College senior and Sterling High School graduate Megan Vandersee was named one of two recipients of the Merle Chapman Leadership Award in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Vandersee was a 4-year member of the Vikings’ women’s golf team has the team’s low average this year. She has been named a National Golf Coaches of America All-America Scholar three times and was nominated as NCAA “Woman of the Year.”


Bears give out
Piccolo awards

Defensive linemen Shea McClellin and Julius Peppers and defensive back Charles Tillman received the Brian Piccolo awards Tuesday at Halas Hall.

The award has been given to a rookie – McClellin winning it this year – since 1970, and a veteran winner was added in 1992. Peppers and Tillman tied for the honor, given to the Bears who best exemplify the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and sense of humor of Brian Piccolo, the Bears running back who died of cancer in 1970.

Jaguars unveil
new uniforms

The Jacksonville Jaguars unveiled their new uniforms Tuesday.

Designed by Nike, the new uniforms are meant to create a new look and new attitude for Florida’s youngest NFL franchise.

The new uniforms feature a “Jags” shield to recognize fans. The number font is described as angular, sharp and modern. The new helmets are black in the front and fade to gold – symbolizing a jaguar coming out of the shadows.


Bobcats fire Dunlap after one season

The Charlotte Bobcats have relieved head coach Mike Dunlap of his duties after one season.

The Bobcats finished with the second-worst record in the league this past season at 21-61.


NIU to upgrade
Huskie Stadium

NIU, the two-time defending Mid-American Conference champion in football, will make some enhancements to Huskie Stadium.

New scoreboards, audio system and ribbon boards will be added, officials announced. The 2013 IHSA state football championships also will be held at NIU.

New playoff gets new name 

The new four-team college football playoff to determine the national title will be called “College Football Playoff,” sources said.


Dodgers’ Billingsley out for season

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Chad Billingsley will undergo Tommy John elbow surgery, be lost for the rest of the year and probably be out until at least April of next season.

Billingsley was shut down last August with a partially torn elbow ligament. This season, he was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts.
