Regarding the Wednesday letter titled “Improve regulation of private gun sales,” Mr. Wasso should learn the facts before he accuses someone of not knowing what they are talking about.
A person in Illinois has to pass a background check (state and federal ) to get a FOID card. A person buying a long gun from a Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer has a 1-day waiting period before he obtains the gun.
Buying a handgun requires a 3-day waiting period. Background checks and FOID card are required.
Mr. Cavanaugh is correct in that “we cannot own, buy, trade or sell a gun without an FOID card.” I suggest Mr. Wasso call the police to confirm this.
A private transaction of a gun sale, or transfer, requires that both parties have a FOID card, sir. Therefore, they have both already passed background checks. The seller is required to keep the identity, and FOID card number, on file for those transactions.
To quote Mr. Wasso, “It is incredibly difficult to have any kind of meaningful conversation on the topic of gun safety as long as people jumping into the debate refuse to know what it is they are talking about.”
Mr. Wasso, stop worrying about guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens. They don’t commit gun crimes. The criminals commit gun crimes, and they don’t bother with the inconvenience of background checks.
Guns, in the hands of law-abiding citizens, save lives.
