MENDOTA – Alfred “Fritz” Rod, 79, of Mendota, formerly of Sublette, died Monday, April 22, 2013, at Mendota Community Hospital.

He was born June 6, 1933, in La Moille, the son of Ross and Verna (Wendel) Rod. He was a graduate of Mendota High School. He was a salesman for Schaffer Oil Co., and then started his own business, known as American Specialists Lubricants. During the same period, he became a distributor for Baldwin Filters from 1974 to 1990. He later became a distributor for Walker Mowers, located in Fort Collins, Colo., and oversaw more than 40 dealers with them. He retired in 2007. He also was engaged in farming in the Sublette and La Moille areas.

Survivors include two daughters, Nigal (David) Oleson of Genoa and Robin (Greg) Cason of Dixon; three sons, Rodney (Cynthia) Rod of Arlington, Ross (Carmen) Rod of Marseilles, and David (Tianna) Rod of South Elgin; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ralph Rod of Princeton and Donald (Shirley) Rod of Amboy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James; and one grandson, Chase.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Merritt Funeral Home in Mendota. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Slutz officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Mendota.

A memorial has been established to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
