Pekin issues voluntary evacuation for flooding

PEKIN (AP) — Possible flood waters have the city of Pekin beginning a voluntary evacuation of about two dozen homes.

Police officers were going door-to-door in the affected neighborhood on Monday. Officials in the central Illinois city say water from the Illinois River is backing up into storm drains. Police are advising residents to leave because the back flow is unpredictable. The voluntary evacuation remains in effect until the water recedes.

Those evacuated can stay at the Salvation Army in Pekin or at an American Red Cross shelter. That's at Illinois Central College CougarPlex in East Peoria.

Flood waters also have affected an older portion of the city's sewage treatment plant. Authorities say the new portion of the plant can handle needed work and is on higher ground.
