Blake Kappes piled up 11 strikeouts and allowed just one run in Game 2 as Milledgeville completed a sweep of NUIC East foe South Beloit in prep baseball action on Saturday at South Beloit.
Kappes (2-1) scattered eight hits and walked four in the Missiles’ 7-1 win in the second game. He was also 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game, while Devin Biller was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
In the opener, Milledgeville (5-6, 2-5) led 9-8 after a wild three innings before things settled down. Kameron DawTyne (2-0) hurled four innings of two-hit ball for the win. Zach Herin was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Doug Williams had two RBIs.
Dixon splits in DeKalb: The Dukes lost the opening game of a doubleheader 6-5 to the Barbs, but rallied to win the second game 5-4.
Jared Frey had the big blow for Dixon (5-11) in the second game with a double with runners on second and third in the fifth inning. Ryan Dixon (1-0) was consistent on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Barbs plated the winning run in the first game on a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count.
Newman suffers two one-run losses: The Comets dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Geneseo, falling 8-7 in the opener and 3-2 in Game 2.
Newman (1-9) got three hits and two RBIs from Dillan Heffelfinger in the first game. Shayne Allen and Alex Buhler each added two hits and two RBIs.
The Comets, who managed just two hits in Game 2, got RBIs from Michael Ely and Kyle Moore.
Erie-Prophetstown 4, Morrison 3: The Panthers edged the Mustangs in a make-up game at Prophetstown, moving to 6-0 in the Three Rivers.
Ethan Howard (5-1) went the distance for EP (10-5), hurling a four-hitter and striking out eight. Teammate Owen McConnell had three RBIs.
Alex Fischbach had two hits and an RBI for Morrison.
IVC 7, Erie-Prophetstown 1: Zach Hart tripled, singled and drove in one run for the Panthers in a home loss to the Grey Ghosts.
Kallen Jepson (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
IVC 6, Morrison 5: The Mustangs took their second tough-luck loss of the day when IVC scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win in Prophetstown.
Alex Fischbach drove in three runs for Morrison (5-3), which let an early 4-0 lead slip away. The Mustangs managed just three hits.
Oregon sweeps West Carroll: The Hawks built a 9-1 lead, then held on for a 9-8 win in Game 1 before completing the sweep with an 11-0 romp in five innings at Thomson.
Alex Cain pitched four innings for the win in the opener, striking out seven. He was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs.
Sawyer Reynolds led the Hawks (4-8) in Game 2, firing a four-hit shutout and going 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.
Fulton wins two at invite: The Steamers defeated Iowa-Grant of Livingston, Wis., 12-1 in four innings, and downed Darlington (Wis.) 15-4 in six innings at the Galena Invitational.
Against Iowa-Grant, Jace Williams paced Fulton (6-7) with three RBIs. Ethan Jones and Weston Jones combined on a four-hitter.
Against Darlington, the Steamers broke open a close game with an eight-run fifth inning. Matt Dail had four hits and four RBIs. Colin Tichler contributed four hits, and Ethan Jones had three RBIs.
Dukes a close second: Dixon tied LaSalle-Peru with a meet-high 21 points, but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker 4-3 and took second place at the six-team, round-robin Princeton Invitational.
Matthew Kerr led the Dukes, going 5-0 and winning the No. 2 singles flight. Dixon’s other three entries all took second: Joey Hammitt at No. 1 singles, and the doubles teams of Kurt Gale and Romulo Lobo at No. 1, and Max Benon and Jon Brechon at No. 2.
Sterling sixth at Galesburg: Cody Woodyatt and Temo Barron finished second at No. 2 doubles as the Golden Warriors finished sixth at the Galesburg Invite.
Skyhawks sweep Waubonsee: Casey McCallister drove in two runs, while Evan Davis collected three hits, including a triple and a double, as Sauk Valley beat Waubonsee 6-5 on Sunday in Sugar Grove.
Matt Liberty got the win, and Brandon Wierenga got the save.
The Skyhawks (14-9) completed the sweep by taking a 5-3 decision in Game 2. Gavin Cathie went the distance, allowing two earned runs. Corbin Blean had three hits, while Davis added two.
Sauk Valley 5, DuPage 4: Caleb Bradley and Gavin Jensen earned singles wins for the Skyhawks (2-5), who were also awarded three forfeit wins because DuPage did not have a complete team.
Bradley was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) winner at No. 1, while Jensen overcame a first-set loss in a 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 victory at No. 4 in the meet that was played at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove.
