Summer theater workshop returns

Published: Saturday, May 4, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

SYCAMORE – Children’s Community Theatre of DeKalb County’s Beginner’s Imagination Camp will be June 11-21. Students with an interest in theater will take a trip into the dust lands of the West, where cacti grow and tumbleweeds drift.

The theme for the 2-week theater camp is “Wild Wild West.”  In its eighth year, Beginner’s Imagination Camp is open to students who will be in kindergarten through sixth grade in the fall.

Camp sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon daily at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 26555 Brickville Road. A performance for family and friends will conclude the camp June 21 at an area theater. The location will be announced.

The cost is $95 and includes daily instruction, as well as participation, in two public performances. Children will learn all aspects of beginner’s theater, such as music, dance, art, stage combat, auditioning, and performing.

CCT also will return with the seventh edition of its Advanced Imagination Camp, designed for students entering seventh through 12th grade in fall. Graduating seniors are welcome.

Advanced Camp runs from June 17-30, and will end with four performances of the ‘50s’ genre musical, “Grease.”

In the performance-based experience, students will be charged with auditioning for, creating, rehearsing, and staging a full-length musical in 2 weeks.

They will learn the skills needed to ace and audition, the tips and secrets to on-stage performance, as well as the songs, dialogue and choreography of the musical.

Every student will receive an on-stage role in the production. While other aspects of musical theater instruction will be included, much of the emphasis of the advanced camp is placed in on-stage performance.

The cost of the 2-week camp is $125 and includes daily instruction, a “Grease” cast T-shirt, and a dinner during a dress rehearsal.

To register for CCT’s Imagination Camp, or to see a full summer camp schedule, visit the organization’s website at or find CCT of DeKalb on Facebook. Enrollment for both camps is limited. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.
