Fundraising event at Sunset May 17

Pinecrest Community and Overhead Door of Rockford will hold a golf play day May 17 at Sunset Golf Club in Mt. Morris.

Three plead guilty in poaching case

Three hunters arrested in 2011 following a high-profile poaching case have pled guilty.

Christopher G. Kiernan, 46, of Minooka field the last plea April 5. He pled guilty to charges related to illegally taking three antlered deer, including a 36-point nontypical buck valued at $35,000. He was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the Illinois DNR and fines totaling $840.


Sauk Valley shows well at CrossFit event

Thirteen members of Sauk Valley Strength and Conditioning competed at the Festivus Games, a CrossFit competition, held Saturday in Moline.

Lynn Kalnins and Allan Toomson placed second in the women’s and men’s novice divisions, respectively, and Ryan Elmendorf, who was fourth in the men’s intermediate class.


Speed Bowl opener in question

The season opener at Speed Bowl Park in Sterling might be postponed by recent rain accumulation.

The venue’s latest Facebook status indicated that a decision would be made by noon today.


Pistons, Cavs fire head coaches

The Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers fired their respective head coaches, Lawrence Frank and Byron Scott.

Scott’s Cavs went a 64-166 record in three seasons, and Frank’s Pistons went 54-94 in two seasons.


Hawks recall Hutton from Rockford

With Ray Emery nursing a lower-body injury, the Blackhawks recalled goalie Carter Hutton from Rockford to back up Corey Crawford against Nashville tonight.

Hutton, 27, is 26-22-1 with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in AHL play this season.
