DIXON – Former City Engineer Shawn Ortgiesen sent a letter via email to Sauk Valley Media late Thursday addressed to the citizens of Dixon.
Here is the letter the former public works and personnel director, who resigned Tuesday, asked to run in its entirety:
Dated: April 18, 2013
To All Members of the Dixon Community,
Words cannot properly express my apologies to you in failing to fulfill my obligations as the city engineer, director of public works, and personnel director for the city of Dixon. I was graciously given the opportunity to serve the city and will always cherish the good work that was completed through the efforts of many. When I came to work for the city, I wanted to use my abilities to help make Dixon an even better place than it already was. Unfortunately, many of my goals will go unfulfilled because of poor personal decisions I have made. My lack of good judgment and unwise actions are well-known and l’m deeply sorry for breaking the trust that was given to me. My heart is with the city of Dixon and I pray that the strength of the community will be renewed.
I am truly sorry,
Ortgiesen resigned after tallying $13,521.14 in personal expenses on a city-issued credit card from April 2007 to last month. Of that amount, he had paid back $4,890.31, meaning he owed $8,630.83.
With his resignation, Ortgiesen attached a check for his remaining balance, which included interest calculated at 5 percent.
The check totaled $9,157.38.
