MILLEDGEVILLE – Terry L. Bowers, 68, of Milledgeville, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Stricken by a sudden heart attack, he died on his fishing boat, doing what he loved.

He was born July 3, 1944, in Freeport, a son of Kenneth and Ruth Bowers. He married Janis Brockhoff on Aug. 17, 1974, in Park Ridge.

He was the superintendent of the Milledgeville School District beginning in 1986. He continued in the same position when the Chadwick School District joined to form Chadwick-Milledgeville Community Unit School District 399, which he served until he retired in 2006. He was very proud to be a part of the merger of the Chadwick and Milledgeville communities; and even more proud of the students and teachers who earned the new district’s first national academic distinction as a “U.S. Department of Education 2004 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School.” Before his career at Milledgeville, he served as principal at Sparland High School and Pecatonica High School. He received his Bachelor of Education degree, followed by a master’s degree and certificate of advanced studies in educational administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He was an Army veteran and an avid fisherman. He enjoyed reading.

Surviving are his wife, Janis of Milledgeville; his mother, Ruth of Clermont, Fla.; two sisters, Patty (Ron) Hutter of El Paso, Texas, and Connie (Chris) Campbell of Clermont; two brothers, Larry (Thelma) Bowers of Weyerhaeuser, Wis., and Danny (Judy) Bowers of Sandwich; a brother-in-law, Ron Averill of Sugar Grove; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Jackie Averill.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, with flag-folding honors at 4 p.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, 520 Holcomb Ave., Milledgeville. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to begin a 2014 scholarship, in care of Milledgeville State Bank, Terry L. Bowers Memorial Scholarship Fund.
