Panthers smash records in Fulton

E-P breaks five meet marks at Steamers Invite

Five meet records were broken – all by the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers – as they cruised to the title in the 11-team Steamers Invitational on Tuesday in Fulton.

E-P scored 150.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Riverdale (93 points). Other area schools were Fulton (4th, 54), Milledgeville-Eastland (6th, 35), Amboy (7th, 31), West Carroll (8th, 24) and Morrison (10th, 7.5).

Sisters Paige and Peyton Rus were both part of three record-breaking performances, and E-P won all four relays – including three in record-setting fashion. Paige Rus won the the triple jump (a record 35 feet, 7 1/2 inches) and high jump (5 feet even), while Peyton won the 200 (a record 26.10 seconds) and the long jump (16-9 1/2).

The Rus sisters joined the Cobert sisters, Courtney and Rachel, in the 800 relay (a record 1:47.12), then Paige ran in the 1,600 relay (a record 4:12.76) with the Cobert sisters and Corrie Reiley, and Peyton joined the Coberts and Heather Strike in the 400 relay (a record 51.07).

Courtney Cobert also won the 100 (13.03), and Reiley also ran in the 3,200 relay (10:39.12) with Brooke Remley, Kassi Henrekin and Breanna Jensen.

Fulton’s lone win came from Averi Leitzen, who set a school record in the 1,600 in 5:44.19. Peyton Sturtevant won the 100 hurdles (17.38) for Milledgeville-Eastland.

Boys tennis

Newman 4, Rockford Lutheran 1: The Comets swept the doubles competition on their way to an easy win Tuesday at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

Yorkville 3, Dixon 2: The Dukes won hard-fought matches at both No. 1 singles and doubles, but lost a nonconference meet at home.

Geneseo 4, Sterling 1: Jonathon Downing and Dustin Stoudt won at No. 1 doubles for the Golden Warriors’ lone point aganst the visiting Maple Leafs.

College tennis

Elgin 8, Sauk Valley 1: Caleb Bradley won the lone match for the Skyhawks in Dixon.
