Landowners, even absentee, spend locally

Published: Friday, April 19, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Landowners who don’t live around here are going to spend disposable income here.

Absentee landowners spend thousands of dollars in taxes that support our schools and local governments, such as counties, townships, fire districts, park districts and drainage districts.

Absentee landowners will pay local contractors to build waterways to install tile, construct buildings, and make repairs. If they custom-farm their land, they spend thousands of dollars locally for seed, fertilizer, pesticides, drying and storage facilities, and insurance, and they lease the machines and operators to do the work.

If they share-crop their land, they still spend thousands of dollars locally for seed, fertilizer, pesticides, drying, storage, and insurance.

Many landowners are older. They need every dollar they can lay their hands on to pay nursing home expenses.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
