Improve regulation of private gun sales

Published: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

In reference to Greg Cavanaugh’s April 9 incredibly flawed letter to the editor opposing universal background checks because “… here in Illinois, gun owners have had to have a FOID card,” Illinois state law ends at our state’s borders, sir, hence the need for a federal law.

I must also point out that here in Illinois, where Mr. Cavanaugh falsely claimed that “we cannot own, buy, trade or sell a gun without a FOID card,” the private (person-to-person) sale of firearms does not require a background check of any kind.

It is incredibly difficult to have any kind of meaningful conversation on the topic of gun safety as long as people jumping into the debate refuse to know what it is they are talking about.
