DIXON – The Park District Board is planning to dip a little more than $90,000 in the red in 2013.

With about $741,000 in its accounts, the board decided to buy some equipment, including leasing a Toro lawn mower for $9,500 per year, a garbage remover at $15,000 a year and a diamond groomer at $3,486 a year.

The board will post its budget on its website and make it available to the public for the next 30 days. A public hearing will be held at 5:45 p.m. May 22 at the park district office to finalize the budget.

Executive Director Deb Carey reported Wednesday that the district finished $11,466.85 in the black in 2012.

In light of former Dixon City Engineer Shawn Ortgiesen’s misuse of a city-issued credit card, board member Kevin Knack asked about the park district’s credit card policy. Carey said a sheet must be signed by employees any time the card is used, reporting how it’s spent.

Also, park board member Ron Pritchard suggested moving park district meetings to the fourth Wednesday of the month. The item is expected to be voted on at the May 22 meeting.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
