Rock Falls band
selling Preds tickets

Rock Falls Marching Rocket Alumni Band members are selling tickets to the May 18 Sauk Valley Predators game at Sterling High School.

Tickets for the game against Bloomington are $8, and proceeds will support the Rock Falls music program. For tickets, call Nikki Cunningham at 815-677-0454 or Melinda Jones at 815-626-7588.


Jamboree this
weekend in Morrison

The Ashford College Spring Softball Jamboree is Friday and Saturday at the Morrison Sports Complex.

Nine teams will take part in the event, which begins at 10 a.m. Friday. Admission is free.


Twin City League
to begin May 7

The Twin Cities Handicap Horseshoe League will begin play for the 2013 season on Tuesday, May 7 at Lawrence Park in Sterling. Play starts at 6:30 p.m. and cost is $2 per week.

Three non-seniors opt for NBA draft

Marquette junior Vander Blue, UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad and Maryland sophomore Alex Len all picked the upcoming NBA draft over continuing their college careers.

Blue averaged 14.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season and led the Warriors to the Elite Eight. Muhammad led the Bruins with 17.9 points per game.

Len, a 7-foot-1 center whose Terps lost to Iowa in an NIT semifinal, averaged 11.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots last season.


Iconic broadcaster Summerall dies at 82

Hall of Fame sportscaster Pat Summerall, who teamed with John
Madden for more than two decades on NFL telecasts, died Tuesday. He was 82.

Summerall, known for his deep, resonant voice and a smooth, understated delivery that wasted no words, worked 16 Super Bowls for CBS and Fox, the most by any network announcer.


Oregon admits recruiting violation

Oregon concedes that
its football coaches
committed at least one major violation related to the NCAA’s ongoing
investigation into recruiting practices from 2008-11.

The school has proposed to self-impose a 2-year probation and scholarship reductions.

The alleged violations occurred under coach Chip Kelly, now the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.


Red Sox reliever Hanrahan to DL

The Boston Red Sox placed relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, retroactive to Saturday.

Andrew Bailey is expected to fill in as closer.
