ELGIN (AP) — Police in a northwest Chicago suburb say a 15-year-old student has been arrested in connection with an unloaded shotgun that was found inside a locker at a high school.

A news release from the Elgin Police Department says authorities got a tip Thursday that a student had brought a weapon to the Gifford Street High School.

Officers searched the school and discovered the weapon inside a locker. No ammunition was found.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the student was charged Friday with possession of a firearm by a gang member, unlawful use of a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The newspaper says the teen has been detained at the Kane County Youth Home pending a detention hearing.
