Local roundup: Davis brothers lead Skyhawks to win

Sauk hits road, beats Augie JV with 11-run seventh inning

Evan Davis had five hits and four RBIs, twin brother Brady added a single, triple and four more RBIs, and the Sauk Valley Skyhawks outslugged the Augustana JV squad 16-11 in a nine-inning game Thursday in Rock Island.

J.J. Johnston added three hits and two RBIs, while Casey McCallister had a pair of doubles and drove in a run. Phillip Rosas added three RBIs for the Skyhawks (9-8), who trailed 6-2 until their 11-run seventh inning.

Zach Wein, the third of seven Sauk pitchers, picked up the win by shutting out Augie in the sixth inning. Cody Behrens and Brandon Wierenga backed up the big inning with a pair of scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth.


Byron 6, Oregon 0: The Hawks managed just three hits in a Big Northern West road loss to the rival Tigers.

Matt Murray pitched three innings for the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) and six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Pearl City 8, West Carroll 6: Shaun Magill singled, doubled and drove in two runs, but the Thunder lost an NUIC West matchup at home.

Matt Ritchie also had a double and two RBIs, and Marshall Benters had a pair of singles, and struck out five in four innings of two-run, three-hit relief of starter Josh Sullivan. Sullivan allowed six runs (three earned) and five hits in three innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks.


West Carroll 4, Galena 3: Ieshia Larson’s two-run home run highlighted the Thunder’s NUIC West victory in Thomson.

Alicia Foltz and Morgan Ashby also drove in runs for West Carroll (3-6, 3-0), who stay unbeaten in conference play.

Allison Thulen (3-3) struck out six, walked seven, and allowed three earned runs and six hits to get the complete-game victory.

Boys tennis

Ottawa 5, Sterling 0: The Golden Warriors won just 11 games in a NIB-12 loss on the road.

Senior Cody Woodyatt and junior Dustin Stoudt narrowly dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles, the lone  players for Sterling (2-5, 2-2) to win more than one game in both sets of a match.
