MOUNT MORRIS – Challenger Dan Elsasser unseated Village President Greg Unger Tuesday by only 20 votes, according to final unofficial results.

"I thought it would be a close race," Elsasser said Tuesday night. "It could have gone either way."

The vote was 319-299 vote, with a third candidate, John Spaine. receiving 20 votes. Ten people who cast ballots didn't vote in the village president's race.

Elsasser said he plans to take time to examine the village to see what will be best for residents.

"When I take over as village president, I plan to take 6 months to review everything," he said. "The board is good and experienced, and I look forward to working hand in hand with them. We all need to work together and listen to the people of Mount Morris."

Some agenda items Elsasser would like to address include the condition of village streets and sidewalks, as well as water and sewer rates.

Unger was surprised at the close vote.

"The people have spoken," he said. "There are a lot of good things in the community. We have a lot of projects under way."

Unger said he is curious to see whether absentee ballots might change the final tally.
