MANLIUS – Jacob Bohm of Walnut, a Whiteside Area Career Center student in Sterling, won Midwest Technical Institute’s second High School Welding Competition.
The contest was April 5 at the institute’s Quad Cities campus in Moline. Bohm also attends Bureau Valley High School.
He earned a trophy and $500.
Micah Miller, a Sterling High School student attending WACC, took 10th place. He received a medal.
Fifty-seven students from 10 schools competed.
They were given pieces of raw metal, a blueprint, and were asked to create a project using arc and metal inert gas welding techniques.
Competitors also took a written exam covering terminology and blueprint reading.
