Softball roundup: Turnroth, Comets outlast Cougars

Laura Turnroth allowed one earned run in nine innings as Newman outlasted Eastland 7-6 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Lanark.

The Comets committed five errors, leading to five unearned runs. Stacia Walter drove in a pair of runs for Newman.

Ashley Nepean tripled, singled and drove in four runs for Eastland.

Geneseo 11, Dixon 4: The Maple Leafs won a Northern Illinois Big 12 West tilt in Geneseo.

Bureau Valley 9, Amboy 7: The Storm rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh, and Dana Kepner hit the game-winning two-run home run in the eighth in a Three Rivers game in Amboy.

Kepner, a freshman catcher, had three hits and four RBIs, and Ashley Phillips added two doubles and three RBIs. Irini Petros had two hits and and RBI and got the win, throwing 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Cassey Doege took the loss for Amboy (3-4, 1-4), which got home runs from Micaela McCoy and Brooke Lovgren.

Aquin 12, AFC 1, 5 inn.: Lauren Meurer had an RBI single that scored Lea Koning, but the Raiders lost an NUIC East game at home. 

Cassidy Koning had two singles at the plate, but took the loss in the circle, allowing 12 runs, seven earned on 11 hits and five walks for AFC (1-2, 1-0).

College softball

Sauk splits at home: The Skyhawks bounced back from a 7-4 loss to beat Illinois Valley 8-0 in five innings at SVCC.

Brianna Schultz (2-2) tossed a three-hitter in the nightcap, and Kelsey Hagan singled, doubled and drove in four runs. Kaiti Mathey and Sam St. George added two hits and an RBI each for Sauk (15-9-1, 5-5

Hagan had two RBIs in Game 1, and Mathey and Kiara Kaleel both doubled. Kaleel had a pair of hits, but went five innings in the circle for the loss.
