Array of classic cars to be showcased in Quad Cities

Those who are fascinated with antique cars will find themselves drawn to the Quad Cities this month.

A number of opportunities to view these classics will present themselves, beginning Saturday.

n The Dwyer & Michaels Classic Car Show will feature more than 100 vehicles at Centennial Park, 315 S. Marquette St. in Davenport, Iowa. The cost is $10. Admission is free for people riding motorcycles until 5 p.m.

The show is part of the Rally on the River, a motorcycle event which began earlier this week.

n The Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club will be at the Isle Casino Hotel, 1777 Isle Parkway in Bettendorf, Iowa. If members of the public are interested in the club's vehicles and judging on their concourse, they can attend from 10 a.m. to noon June 23. Viewers are asked not to interfere with the judging process by crowding the cars. There is no charge.

Sauk Valley residents will have a chance to see the club closer to home. In the morning of June 19, club members will be in Franklin Grove before heading along the Lincoln Highway/old U.S. Route 30 through Dixon and to Clinton, Iowa., headed to Bettendorf.

n The Hemmings Motor News Great Race will pass through Davenport on June 23. This is an old car rally featuring vehicles built before 1969. They will gather at the Mississippi Riverfront downtown in LeClaire Park, 400 W. Beiderbecke Drive. The cars are expected to arrive around 5 p.m. at 1-minute intervals for a little over an hour and a half. They will be at the park until 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to visit.

The vehicles are making their way south along the Mississippi from Minnesota to Alabama.

An additional feature of this event will be the Barbecue & Craft Brew on June 22-23 in the park. There will be beer sampling from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by live music from 5 to 10 p.m. Judging begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner will be announced at 4 p.m. Sunday. In the afternoon, a local car show and shine will be at the Freight House parking lot beside the park.

This is a fundraiser for Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities.

n The Antique Automobile Club of America Grand National will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29 at John Deere Commons, 1201 River Drive in Moline.

More than 350 cars are expected to be there. The vehicles will date from the early 1900s through the present. This event is free.

There's much to see on wheels this month south of the Sauk Valley, including a pleasant drive to get there.
